Preparing Your Home for Safe Recovery After Hospital Discharge

A practical checklist to transform your bedroom and bathroom into a clean, safe, and accessible recovery sanctuary.

Authored by: CURE HEALTH Patient Safety Lead

A successful transition from hospital to home begins before the patient even leaves the ward. Creating a clean, risk-free environment prevents falls, reduces hospital readmissions, and accelerates recovery.

1. Clear Walking Pathways: Remove loose rugs, floor mats, electrical cords, and low furniture that could cause trips or slips.

2. Bathroom Safety: Install sturdy grab rails near the toilet and shower area. Place non-slip rubber mats inside the bathing area and ensure dry flooring outside.

3. Bedside Setup: Position the patient's bed close to an accessible power outlet for medical devices. Keep emergency contact numbers, medications, and a bell or call button within easy reach.

4. Infection Control: Maintain adequate ventilation, clean bed linens daily, and provide hand sanitizer dispensers at the bedroom entrance for visiting family and attendants.
